About us
Govanhill Voices started life in 2012 as part of the Streetland festival under the leadership of Harry Campbell and Jane Bentley. This project was made possible through a grant from SE Arts (South East Glasgow Arts Network) for an Artist in Residence at Streetland 2012 through Glasgow City Council (Glasgow Life).
After Streetland no-one wanted to stop singing, so we carried on meeting at the Govanhill Neighbourhood Centre under the leadership of Harry Campbell. In April 2013 Debbie Armour took over as songleader, assisted at various times by Cath Campbell. In the winter of 2018, after 5 years of sustained sterling songleading, Debbie moved on to focus on other musical commitments. We were led by the fabulous Zoe Katsilerou from January to September 2019. We were led by the inimitable Laura Hill from September 2019 up to our Carols in the Pub 2019 gig at the Glad Cafe. From February 2020 until June 2021 we were been led by the amazing Katarzyna Sanak who guided us through a year of online rehearsals and performances. From September 2021 until Christmas we welcomed back Laura to lead us once again as we returned to in-person rehearsals. Since new year 2022 we have been led by the energetic and talented Dorothee Nys.
In the past we've had financial as well as moral support from Streetland thanks to Awards for All. In April 2015 we moved from being an informally run group to a properly structured community organisation with a constitution and committee. We typically have between 10 and 15 singers at a rehearsal and are in demand for local events. Performances have ranged from local arts festivals such as Streetland and the Southside Festival to supporting The Silencers at the Oran Mor. We also performed at the first Glasgow Shanty Day, a fantastic event full of salty singing and sweet serenades of the sea.
