Here are some of our past performances. This isn't an exhaustive list but a good place to start to get a feel of the kind of music we sing and the sort of events we have taken part in.

Govanhill Voices Christmas Concert 2020 - Carols from Around the World
Christmas 2020 was a strange time. With the Covid-19 pandemic ongoing there was no option to gather together in person and share songs. Thankfully, the resourcefulness of our songleader coupled with the hard work of our members produced a wonderful winter concert that we broadcast to people from all over the world over Zoom.
We recorded parts for our songs remotely and Kasia, our songleader, put them together to produce a virtual choir. The songs included Carol of the Bells, Mravalzhamier, White Winter Hymnal and O Holy Night. We also had a cameo from Muldoon's Picnic. As part of the event we held fundraiser for Project Present Govanhill. We were overjoyed at the success of this, raising £535 plus an additional £200 donated on behalf of the choir by the committee. We were able to provide children in need with toys and clothes that would otherwise have gone without at Christmas. A warm thank you to the generosity of the choir and our audience. Our concert was recorded and broadcast on Christams Eve on Radio Buena Vida, a local Govanhill radio statio. You can listen to it in full here. |
Carols Not in the Pub
The Christmas tradition of caroling was maintained in spite of the pubs beaing closed to festive singing. We made merry remotely on Zoom to boost our Christmas cheer. You can see the Folk Carols webpage here.
Glasgow Shanty Night 2020
We were delighted to take part in the second installment of the Glasgow Shanty festival. We took the opportunity to get dressed up for this remote event.
Here is our version of Santiana. This is a real foot stomper of a shanty. It tells the story of a sea battle during the Mexican American war of 1846-1848 (although it is of questionable historical accuracy). We chose to sing Shallow Brown again in memory of David Stevenson. He led this song in 2019. |

Glasgow Shanty Day 2019
|
We sang at Folk Carols in the Pub! This is a great event every year. There was mulled drinks, music and festive merriment.

Glasgow Shanty Day was a great event. There were acts from all around the UK. Govanhill Voices gave a great showing.
We sang Lowlands, Barrett's Privateers and Shallow Brown. Lowlands is an old song. It seems to be an Anglo-Scots sea shanty (or maybe a ballad) that became popular in the Southern USA. More information can be found here. Barrett's Privateers is a shanty written by the late Canadian folk singer Stan Rogers. Great song, great fun to sing. Shallow Brown is a mournful song. Part sea lament, part slave song. More information on the song can be found here. |
